Bear Wrestling is a Crime in Louisiana

"B" is for Bear Wrestling ( I kid you not)

Bear wrestling is one of the Cruelty to Animals Acts that Louisiana has so diligently passed. Why La. has not outlawed cockfighting is beyond me, but hey as long as we are making some forward progress.  I mean, we no longer allow our residents to wrestle with bears for sport or entertainment. And for all of you gamblers headed to Louisiana, be warned: No more wagering on bear wrestling matches.

This act covers all aspects related to this event, from the actual owner, handler and trainer of the wrestling bear to the owner of the location where the event is held. So, if becoming part of the sport of bear wrestling is what you have in mind for your chosen career, you better read on to see what faces you in the state of Louisiana.

The law and penalties can be read here: Louisiana Revised Statutes

In Louisiana, bear wrestling is defined as a "contest between one or more persons and a bear for the purpose of fighting or engaging in a physical altercation".

Bottom line: Leave bear wrestling to Da Bears.

Leave bear wrestling to Da Bears.

I honestly can't think of anything much more crazy than fighting a bear!

Why would someone be so stupid to wrestle a bear anyway? Besides, I prefer to see them them as cuddly beings even though they're not. But they are in my imagination.

HAR!!!!! Go figure!

Melissa Sugar said...

Good Lord! I had NO idea people did this. And yes, LA should outlaw cock fighting too. Why do men find such fun in these stupid acts?

Melissa Sugar said...

Wow. I had no idea people wrestled bears! Crazy. I'm glad they outlawed it though. Makes me wonder if other states still allow this....

Melissa Sugar said...

Good for Louisiana! That is really cruel.

Someone wrestles bears? Well, here in Portugal they grab the bull by its horns, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. I'm glad they're banning it - bullfighting should also be banned. Hope the bears win sometimes!

Where's the sport in wrestling with a bear?. Personally, I'd much prefer to wrestle rabbits ...

Melissa Sugar said...

Wow.  It takes a special kind of person to consider wrestling a bear.

I never knew.  Interesting and sad at the same time.   I suppose if I was Grizzly Adams or possibly a supernatural character, wrestling with bears might make sense.  Beyond that it seems surprisingly more inhumane for humans.  Great B post!

BTW: I gave you the Sunshine Award on my blog: http://minaburrows.blogspot.com/2012/03/fridays-with-fred.html - Congrats!

I was so surprised to see your post on bear wrestling because I have a tidbit of it for my C post. Just found out that one of the reasons it is so hard to wrestle a bear is becuase they don't have shoulders like we do.....enjoyed the post.

This Bear thanks you for drawing the matter to Humans attentions. Wrestling Bears, like dancing Bears, door have an enjoyable life.

If you really want to wrestle a Bear, go to Montana or Alaska, put out a pile of food, and wait for the Bear to come to you. And have you for lunch.

Good grief.  I had no idea Melissa.

Very creative with the "B."

Melissa, so nice to meet you! Great post, and creative use of B!  Thanks for stooping by Diary of a Square Toothed Girl, and I am your newest follower!

What would possess anyone to wrestle a bear? We have them on our property at times, and the most I want to do is look at them, then chase them away.

Melissa Sugar said...

We really haven't come so far in our evolution, have we, the MODERN, ENLIGHTENED HUMAN?

Melissa Sugar said...

You don't see that in NY! LOL!

Melissa Sugar said...

*giggles*  Oh, too funny. I wonder who would think that was a good time. I suppose people at one point did it for money or to prove they were strong or something. I will take my bears from a distance, thanks.

Melissa Sugar said...

I want to know who is crazy enough to wrestle a bear!!

Melissa Sugar said...

Why would you even want to do such a thing? And how  bored was the person who invented it that the thought came in their mind "hey I think I might like to wrestle me a bear" lol

Melissa Sugar said...

Good grief. I can't believe they even had to make a law to stop people doing this because I can't believe people were doing it in the first place. Actually, sadly, I can.

Hats off to a highly original post!

And the bears are much cuter wrestling each other, anyhow.

Sorry to have freaked you out w/ my early B post (although it was quite funny to read your comment, hehe) -- I've got mine all pre-scheduled to post at 12:01 am CST, so who knows, maybe I'll freak out a few more people on the challenge...if I'm lucky. ;)

The last time I saw bear wrestling was at a club in Ft. Lauderdale.  I remember it vividly because it has been announced on local radio 3-4 weeks previous.

When I arrived, a woman was arguing with the trainer because the club and owner had refused to allow her to wrestle the bear!

The prize was $1,500 plus other goodies, so they gave her some goodies, free admission for her and her beau, and this placated them both.

Even if it was legal, I don't I would EVER want to wrestle a bear!

I stop at Bear Hugs!  :)

Melissa Sugar said...

I didn't even know bear wrestling existed. But now I know its bad.

Melissa Sugar said...

I can't stop blinking. Bear wrestling... who knew...

Great post! :)

Melissa Sugar said...

I've never heard of bear wrestling before. Why oh why?

Melissa Sugar said...

Bear wrestling? That sounds crazy! Who thought of that? Good thing it's illegal (in Louisiana)

Melissa Sugar said...

I've seen the claws on bears. I wouldn't want to get close enough to one to hug it, much less wrestle.

Thanks for dropping by my blog via the A to Z Challenge. I love April just for the new blogger friends I make.

Wow!  That is crazy!  Who would want to wrestle a bear, I mean really? Have these people lost their minds?

Hi...I'm hopping over from the A to Z Challenge.  I LOVED your post today.  I'm FROM Louisiana and I think that's about the most retarded law they have had to pass in a long time.  I mean, REALLY?  They nave nothing better to do with their Saturday nights than to choose from cock fighting and bear wrestling?  No, wait...they can't bear wrestle anymore so I gues the cock fighting owners are happy...;0)

And yes, I no longer live in the great state of Louisiana...I've moved to Tennessee...where surprisingly enough, they have issues with cock fighting around here as well...go figure...lol...

Good luck with the challenge!

why anyone would wrestle with bears is beyond me. I'd run the other way, for sure!

There's absolutely nothing about that 'sport' which makes me think it would be a good thing to get involved in.

Melissa Sugar said...

What????? Wow. I studied Renaissance literature and history. Back in the day they used to practice "bear baiting" as entertainment, but that involved letting dogs attack a bear and seeing who won, or something? Incredibly cruel.

Seriously, though, do they take the bear's teeth out? I am wondering why those guys aren't covered in their own blood. Another amazing post. Well done.

Way to go, La. Get rid of it!!!

Melissa Sugar said...

 Me too.

Melissa Sugar said...

I have no idea, Alyssa. I guess because it is Louisiana. If you come back again during the challenge for letters "T" and "W", you will learn about some crimes in La. that make bear wrestling seem like littering.

Melissa Sugar said...

me too

Melissa Sugar said...

But we still allow Cockfighting  & wagering on cockfighting. How embarrassing.

Melissa Sugar said...

Thank you. I had no idea about bear baiting, but at least that wasn't present time.

Melissa Sugar said...

I have never heard of bear wrestling, it makes me sad to learn there are enough people out there who have done it to necessitate a law against it.
