Winners To Be Announced-Get Fired Up

If you signed up for or participated in any portion of the "Get Fired Up" blogfest~ The time has come to select the lucky winners.
I have some announcements so please read on:

My husband went back in the hospital on Monday, with complications from his recent heart surgery. He is doing well & they did not have to perform a bypass. My youngest was sent home from school with a fever on Tuesday and wouldn't you know it- he has the damn flu. Poor baby, he is so miserable.

Bennett, is home from school for the next two weeks according to the doctor which means I am home as well.  I am trying to sleep when he sleeps because when he is awake he is seriously suffering. I have him sleeping in a chair by the fireplace in my room for two reasons, (1) so hopefully none of the other kids will catch it-yea right, I know and (2) his body temperature fluctuates depending on whether his fever is high or breaking. We have the air conditioner on 68 and the fireplace going. I hate that I cannot be at the hospital with my husband, but his prognosis is good and my little boy is so fragile right now.

I cannot believe I am about to show the world how messy & cluttered my bedroom is, but he is sleeping peacefully right now (until motrin stops working again).  OMG, my room is bad, but it is his little sick corner & I do clean it up every couple of hours. He has his puppy with him. Wow, you can even catch a glimpse of my storyboards on the wall.

I don't know my blogging schedule for the next couple of weeks.

I will select the winners of the "Get Fired Up" blogfest this week. You may or may not know that there are three separate and distinct contest or raffles that will have winners. I should have the winners of the random drawing prizes by the end of the week.

The second two may take a little longer, but I will have the winners announced as soon as possible.
Those of you who entered to win the Kindle fire by helping a new, struggling or undiscovered blogger, please leave a comment in this post with a link to your blog post that shares the name and URL of the blogger.

With everything going on at home,I will not be able to pop around much this next week.  I have not forgotten you and I apologize in advance if I am unable to participate in any blogfest or other events I may have signed up for.  I will pretty much be a sporadic blogger until Bennett is better and my husband is home and well. I am guessing a week, two tops.

I will post contest updates and announce winners as they become known. Thank you to everyone who participated and thank you for your understanding of my family issues.

I have an unrelated question I hope someone can help me with.  I am curious how each of you are coping with Google Friend Connect's untimely demise?  I understand it is not supposed to  apply to blogger accounts (not yet anyway),  but they can pull the plug on us at anytime-they have already demonstrated that.

Goodbye Google Friend Connect?  Or is it really?

This is disturbing news. I know it has been in the works for over a year,  but I hate to lose my friend connect community.  I am a newer blogger and I can only imagine how much this sucks for those of you who have colossal communities, especially if your google friends and members have opted to receive your newsletters.
No, that is not my Google Friend Connect. I am close to three hundred friends and I am proud to have each and every one of you.   I shudder to think you will just disappear after I worked so hard to get you here.

Google, of course, recommends that we all join google plus and transfer our communities to their site.  I am a google plus member,  but I have not spent a significant amount of time on my google plus page.  So far it has failed to hook me.

I don't want to risk losing my  contacts and friends.  I hope we will all continue to follow each other.

Here is where you can find me on Google Plus

Have ya'll already made alternative blog follower arrangements. I have read many articles that suggest I should voluntarily remove my Google Friend Connection widget, but I don't want to. I am embarrassed to admit it, but I don't even really understand the whole RSS and Feedburner craze.  I am going to learn.

Other options include:  But how many hours per day can we devote to learning the ins and outs of more social networking sites?

  • Linky Followers
  • RSS Feed
  • Google Reader (or does it disappear as well?)
  • Subscribe by email
  • BlogLovin'
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • Google  Plus                                                                                                                                  What is your plan?

  1. OMG Melissa. Between your son and your husband you sure have a lot on your plate! Hang in there! As far as losing the googles friends connect, I'm bummed about it too. I'm  on Google + but like you, I don't get on it all that often. I'm not sure what a good substitute to follow everyone's blogs would be, but hopefully something new will come up soon.

  2.  Oh my goodness, I hope everyone in your family who is suffering gets better soon! I hope you have time to look after yourself too!

This is the first I am hearing about the loss of Google Friend Connect. This makes me very sad :(

  3. I'm sorry that you've  been going through so much with your husband, and now your son is sick too. It's a wonder that you find the time to do anything. Hope your boys are feeling better soon. Try to find some time to take care of yourself too. Thanks for hosting the blogfest, and it sounds like you have the right solution to the Google problem.

  4. Big hugs for you! I am so sorry to hear about all that has been going on for you and your family. Hope every one is in the best of health very soon.

I'm ashamed to admit I have no idea what is going with Google Friend Connect. It's disappearing? Are Blogger Followers disappearing as well?

  5. Melissa, prayers for your husband and son's quick recoveries.
I added Linky Followers to help my Wordpress blogger buddies. I follow everyone through Google Reader at the moment.

  6. family first!
    praying for you all

and we dont need to know how many followers we have, do we?
as long as we have the reader and comment back and forth and do fests etc, its a bogus # anyway.

rant: i will not be forced to succomb to g+ and their scheme to compete w/ facebook!

  7. Prayers for you, your son, and your husband. Take care of yourself so you can take care of your family. I don't know about Friend Connect - it's still there, and I just connected with someone new a few minutes ago. Maybe it isn't called Friend Connect anymore because it connects with your G+ profile? Don't know. I'm far from being even close to savvy where social media is concerned.

  8. Oh, the poor thing! It sucks when the little ones get sick. Take care of the family and sending waves of healing power through the screen. :)

Here's the link to my blog post, I decided to offer help to anyone who wanted, so there is more than just one person.  http://readingwritingandlovinit.blogspot.com/2012/03/helpin-dem-bloggas-out.html

Thanks again and take care. :)

  9. Sorry to hear about your husband and your son!  Believe me, I can sympathize, having just gotten out of the hospital myself not two weeks ago.  (It took them three days to rule out "anything immediately fatal," which was longer than I myself took to rule out "immediately fatal" afflictions. But, then, I didn't use an X-ray or any fancy doctoring; I just went on the fact (?) that I was still alive.

As for the Google plus/Friends connect, etc, here is my solution to all Internet problems:

    1. Do something on the Internet. 2. Wait until someone complains about something I did. 3.  Ask them how I fix the thing they are complaining about.  4. Fix it. I've sort of turned the world into my tech support.

  12. It seems silly that they are getting rid of something that so many people use.  I don't understand the feed thing either.  I hope your family feel better soon :)

  13. Melissa, I am so sorry! I hope there is someone there for YOU.

  14. Melissa, first, lots and lots of sunshine and healthy thoughts sending your way for the entire family. I hope everyone's all better soon.
I just started exploring Google + last week and still trying to figure it out. For now, I've added the Linky Friends tool. May be a little more user friendly, but time will tell.

  15. Melissa, thanks for having the contest. It's thanks to you I got the offer to help get my blog up and running. Also, sorry to hear about your hubby and your son. Hope they get well soon. By all means - take care of them (and yourself!) first.

As to the GFC thing, I don't know. Mine was one that went missing. I was just getting my blog off the ground (about a month) and already had 60+ followers. I'm totally bummed and trying to figure out what to do. I guess I'll have to explore the other social networking aids you mentioned.

  16. Oh, Melissa, I am so sorry to hear your son is sick while your husband is in the hospital. Both of those are enough on their own, but, geez, you poor thing! I am totally amazed you are posting at all. Just wanted to say thanks again for the contest and hop. I gained several followers through this hop and have learned a ton about blogging.

I haven't delved into Google+ either, but I have added Bloglovin' and Linky follow to my blog, just in case. So far, it only applies to Wordpress and such, as I understand it, but yes, they may be trying to shove us off into Google+ville. Sign up for all of your Wordpress friend's blogs some other way if you haven't already!

  17. Melissa, please don't worry about blogging at all when you have so much on your plate right now. I hope your husband and your son recover quickly, and I'm sending you a hug because you could probably use one right about now.

  18. I hope your son and husband get better soon. Tough times!

I'm off to check out the Linky followers thing.

  19. Your poor baby. I hope he recovers quickly. And your hubby, too? Poor you! I hope you get some rest, too!

  20. That's scary!  Will my blog go away???  I have put up linky but know nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't think our blogs will go away, but I am the wrong person to ask. I have far more questions than answers. Google can do pretty much whatever they want to do. They have demonstrated that. For now, it is my understanding that only non blogger accounts lost the google friend connect. Blogger is supposed to be exempt, but I have seen more than a few blogger blogs today that have an empty box of google friend connect. I am so confused. I have heard that we should purchase our own domain just to ensure that we never lose our blog. I suppose that makes the most sense. If they can retire google friend connect, piknik and a host of other google gadgets then they can retire blogger or bloodspot. It is a scary thought. What would become of all of our content

  22. Thank you. I have a lot of family support. My mom is close by. She is keeping the girls so they don't get sick, but they have to come home Monday. It has been hard visiting the hospital, because I have to get my sister or someone to stay with him for a couple of hours and he just cries. He normally doesn't care if I am gone, but when kids are sick they really want mom. I know I always did, still do.
